Great Tit in Winter - 11" x 14" Framed canvas
I have two bird feeders in my garden, and I spend many quiet moments watching the small birds of the neighbourhood gather there throughout the day. What began as simple observation has revealed an unwritten hierarchy among the different species that visit the feeders.
The garden itself seems divided. A small group of brightly coloured Great Tits has claimed the cherry blossom tree as their domain, while a much larger flock of House Sparrows occupies the smaller bushes and the wooden fence on the opposite side. From their perches, the House Sparrows dominate the feeders, squabbling noisily over whose turn comes next. Nearby, the Great Tits wait with remarkable patience, watching and waiting.
If the feeders are left unguarded for even a moment, a bold Great Tit will dart down and slip into a feeder. Almost instantly, the ever-vigilant House Sparrows swoop in, chasing the intruder away. Only once the sparrows have eaten their fill do the Great Tits descend in turn, finally free to feast at their leisure on the delicious mix of peanut butter and seeds.
